Could someone post the download link?
March 13th, 2008 at 9:16 am
p-J look closer at the first picture.

March 13th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Just tried this on a friend’s Macbook Pro, but now he can’t login anymore?
It just keeps coming back to the loginwindow…
March 13th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Maybe not for leopard?
March 13th, 2008 at 9:52 am
p-J, did you read that it will not work on Leopard and nuke your install if you try?
You can still recover your Leopard install by restoring the following frameworks from your Leopard install DVD:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework
March 13th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Bummer, too bad it doesn’t work with leopard…
March 13th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Apple did not upgrade the Apple TV OS to Leopard. It still runs Tiger version 10.4.8. I would suggest you install Tiger on a small external HD, and load atv4mac from there. Or create a dedicated partition.
March 13th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Could you maby give me the commands i should type in the terminal of the DVD?
March 13th, 2008 at 10:31 am
There are no patches for it to run on Leopard.. some workarounds or something??
March 13th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
If you are having problems with the resolution, press Menu and + on the remote while in AppleTV and you will be able to select a better one.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:26 am
Congrats on your latest release. As soon as I can procure a copy of Tiger 10.4.8+ I will give this a try.
How is it on HD downloads such as HD Podcasts and HD trailers? Can you rent a movie using this latest version of ATV4mac 1.3?
March 14th, 2008 at 8:10 am
rudiger, someone with an iTunes account in the States should try and report back. I did not receive many feedback from the users… How is it going guys? Be sure to get release 1.3, it should work with no modifications! Peace.
March 14th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Does it support DVDs ? I’m using Leopard’s Front Row to play both DVDs and media files on my TV, so playing DVDs for me is a must.
March 14th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I got a copy of Tiger headed my way! Can’t wait to try this out. Got my external drive all ready.
The big grief I had with Apple TV was that the processor and RAM wasn’t powerful enough to run DVD rips. Hopefully NitoTv and Sapphire will mature enough so that they can run stable on Take 2.
A question macgeek: did you install the take 2 plugins the same you would have install them on a regular AppleTV device? (SSH, copy files over, run the install as sudo?)
March 14th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
rudiger, it’s even easier on a mac. Just drop the xxx.frappliance plugins files in /System/Library/CoreServices/Front\ Row.app/Contents/PlugIns/
March 15th, 2008 at 3:57 am
Sadly, no support for HD rentals. Tells you that you need to be hooked up via HDMI or something like that. Sadly you are told this AFTER purchasing and attempting to play videos…
March 15th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
i tried to rent a movie (simpsons the movie - hd) from american itunes store account. the download startet but at the end (after 99%) an error message came up that the movie could not have been downloaded. whenever i try to restart the download from the menu-settings-downloads message, the error message comes up again.
has anybody else succeeded in downloading movies from the itunes store??
March 15th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
when checking downloads it states:”download error -42177″. and: “please check later”. it’s kind of strange because the download startet (up until 99%) without any problem. any clue what the problem could be?
March 15th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Roman, check in the root of your harddisk (disk labeled disk0s1) if the Media folder was created. If not try to create a media folder, but I think this will require patching AppleTV framework with your own unique device id.
March 15th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
media folder is there. i deleted the downloaded files and started to download again. after 5 min. or so atv says that the movie is ready to watch. since it dont want to watch the movie now, i let it continue to download and again / the error pops up. movie is not playable then. any hints?
March 15th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I tried this on my tiger mac mini running 10.4.11 and it fails to open any answers
March 16th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
got it working now lol
March 18th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Works great, but does not to select more of 1280 x 768, my tv is 1360 x 768, it´s possible?. And no start with remote.
Sorry for my english.
Thanks for your help.
March 18th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Patrick, I don’t know, I don’t have such huge TV
If you like my work, consider donating a few bucks and I would reinvest it in required hardware
March 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
It doesnt seem to remember any of the settings after an exit, I have to reset the resolution with each start. Also the menu behaves weird, perhaps due to the res reset with each start-up.
Also, it doesnt seem to pass AC3 audio out even if the movie contains it.
Even with those few quirks, this rocks man… and many many thanks!
March 18th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
This is great. However, is it supposed to connect with my iTunes library? I can’t figure out how to do that and would appreciate some assistance if anybody can help.
March 18th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Leopard’s Front Row is dreadful and I’d much prefer the Tiger one but…this is better than both, that is hoping it will eventually get onto Leopard - I understand why it isn’t at the mo.
Anyways, main thing is, does it work with iTunes i.e. when you launch Front Row it continues playing the iTunes song etc…That’s my main bugbear with Leopard’s version, beyond the interface!
Thanks.
March 18th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Hey! Does anyone want to post the download link? Pretty Please?
March 19th, 2008 at 6:39 am
This is just amazing!!
March 19th, 2008 at 7:59 am
Sure you can stream video from your Apple TV Take 2 to your HDTV, but what if you want to stream content to your Mac? Try out ATV4mac, downloadable from MacGeek. It’s a plugin that enables you to run your…
March 19th, 2008 at 9:34 am
can’t wait to download, hope the legal issues are resolved quickly!
March 19th, 2008 at 11:24 am
I cant wait till it could work on leopard! I wish it would be soon! This sounds so exciting!
March 19th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Is this supposed to work on a PPC as well? I installed it on my PPC 10.4.11, however after I rebooted, my Cube kept hanging at the start-up. Hope it works on PPC as well though as I think this would be an awesome application.
March 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
No run from the remote?.
March 25th, 2008 at 3:35 am
Can’t find a bit torrent for this, anybody able to seed?
March 25th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
I can not find the link to download. HELP ME!!!!!
March 25th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Are you blind
March 25th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Do you need a password for the dmg file to open?
March 25th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Yes! The download link is up! But the DMG requires a password. Where do i go to find this password?
March 25th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
Ah, never mind, there it is. Thanks guys!
March 25th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
I am an idiot. But at least there are more of me. The password is directly below the download link. entitled dmg password.
March 26th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Is there also an Uninstaller?
March 26th, 2008 at 10:57 am
To uninstall: Delete /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app, then run Apple’s Software Update and install Front Row.app.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Hi, I’m getting this error when I go to install:
ERROR: ATV4mac Installer returned 5
What am I doing wrong?
March 26th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
@Alastair: did you drag the ATV4mac Installer into your Applications folder ? It cannot be run straight from the dmg.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Yup, I’m running the installer from my apps folder.
Here’s the full error message:

Are you running a PowerPC mac? Intel macs are only supported.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Just thought of something, is this intel only? Would explain why it’s not installing.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Snap. Yeah, I’m still rockin’ out my ppc. That’s a shame, thanks for the help.
March 26th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Will you release a version that works on ppc??
March 26th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
It’s not working for me on my intel Mac Mini. Here’s the install log. Any ideas what’s wrong?

March 26th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Which is the changelog from 1.4?
March 26th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Patrick: Read the goddamn README ^^
March 26th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Doesn’t work for me on fresh Tiger install with all updates to 10..4.11
The new Front Row.app will not launch. Gives me “Malformed Mach-O file” - the binary is not in a valid format. Something going wrong with the installer
March 26th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Those who are having problems, please redownload the files, I did a few bugfixes.
March 26th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Macgeek,
Shouldn’t you change the version to 1.4.1 due to these recent fixes ?
March 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
nevermind …
March 26th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Trying to install on 10.4.11, but keep getting this error message:
ERROR: ATV4mac Installer returned 5
I have front row working, and xcode 2.5
March 26th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
1.4.1 seems to fix the plugin install errors, but not the others. See http://pastebin.ca/958631 for an updated logfile. Thanks for trying!
March 26th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Still failing - http://pastebin.ca/958652

Btw how did you get to my blog, rofl
March 26th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
I’m so waiting for you to find a way to make it work on leopard
could be a reason to come back to 10.4 :p
however i love time machine WAY too much to do that ^^
March 26th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
muse69, resize your main partition and create a second 10GB partition for holding Tiger. Then you can dual boot Leopard and Tiger with refit. Hope Apple will allow virtualization of their OS soon.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
So has anyone figured out the proper alignment of the stars to get the 1.4.1 installer to work?
Thanks for the work!
Doc
March 27th, 2008 at 2:20 am
Thanks for the hard work macgeek. I love the prospect, but can’t seem to get it to work on my Intel Mini. Having the same issues as Joe Hair: Keep getting “No such file or directory for FrontRow.app and all frappliances…
Any suggestions?
(I downloaded 1.4 and 1.41 and installed on a freshly patched 10.4.11)
March 27th, 2008 at 3:31 am
Hi, i have a feeling that your installer may be a bit wrong.
i think your installer is moving the 5 files one directory too far, for example:
instead of moving “Front Row.app” to …/Core Services/
it moves it to inside the existing “Front Row.app” so it goes:
…/Core Services/Front Row.app/Front Row.app/
and does this with the 4 frameworks aswell.
hope this helps
(though i tried manually moving the files and repairing the permissions but i couldn’t get it to work
March 27th, 2008 at 4:59 am
has anyone figured out how to get this to work cause it just ain’t happening for me
March 27th, 2008 at 8:08 am

March 27th, 2008 at 8:09 am

G4 Powerbook. 10.4.11
Any ideas?
March 27th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Yea, upgrade to an intel MacBook as PPC isn’t supported.
March 27th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Ok, so has anyone actually gotten 1.4.1 to work? I haven’t seen any reports of that… Perhaps we can figure out what’s different.
March 27th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
DocTauri, wait for my 1.4.2 release, it will be out in a couple of hours
March 27th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Great, thanks for the update, and for all of your hard work!
Doc
March 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I will wait for the next installer as the Intelmac book is not flying yet. Thanks for the hard work thought!
March 27th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Strange it seems the installer has gone back to 1.4 did you remove 1.4.1?
March 27th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
I downloaded xcode 2.5 to install and I got a checksum error. Any advice.
I have tiger 10.48
March 27th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I just did a fresh install of 10.4.11 with all updates, installed Xcode 2.5 and ATV4mac 1.4 (at lest it looks like 1.4 even tough the link says 1.4.4) but every time i click on FrontRow (which is version 2.o) it just does not do anything… (intel mac mini 1.5 single)
Is there anything im doing wrong?
Jo
March 27th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Correction - it says 1.4.1
March 28th, 2008 at 12:40 am
Realise that this is full of people struggling to install the damn thing but…is there no hope in getting it on PPC? I understand that Leopard support will more or less come from Apple but I don’t see them moving AppleTV to PPC?!
Here’s hoping that 10.5.3 updates frontrow to the new interface, after all, that’s what happened with it under Leopard!
March 28th, 2008 at 2:21 am
Doesn’t work. Installed Tiger, Front Row from the DVD didnt install, Xcode Installed OK, but after Install of ATV4Mac Finished, i rebooted, and tried to open FR but nothing!!!!!!!! Come On…!!!!!
March 28th, 2008 at 2:50 am
I tried what I believe is the new version (Looks like you changed the BugFix to a MinorFix) but the install still did not work. http://pastebin.ca/960436
Hey allbrokeup, be patient…
Don’t pressure someone thats doing all the work…
Thanks again for the effort macgeek, I wish I knew where to start, I’m sure this project is not the easiest!
March 28th, 2008 at 10:35 am
New Version 1.4.2 is OUT !
Delete the old version from /Applications before dragging the new one!
Report issues as usual via pastebin.ca
Thanks!

Steve, the log you copy/pasted here is not from the latest version. It’s from 1.4.1. With 1.4.2, you should see a progress bar while downloading. Also if you rerun installer, it will not redownload but use the already downloaded files.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
the app still not start, yeah we see progress bar in new installer

March 28th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Thank you for the logs. There is definitively a problem with gdb. Binary decryption is not working on certain installations. If you have that error in the execution: http://pastebin.ca/960729, wait for version 1.4.3. Thanks.
March 28th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Keep up with the good work, and don’t let some of these guys push you ! Congratulations for the effort anyway.
March 28th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

March 28th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Macgeek,
I’m guessing it is working for you … what is the config you have ?
March 28th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Paulo, I have no clue what is going on, the gdb method just worked for me and my beta testers… Now it’s not even working for me anymore. I have to find a workaround to decrypt binaries other than with gdb… I might have an idea, please stay tuned.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Well, I did something really stupid. Since the installer in the DMG was named “… Installer”, I assumed that the instruction to move it to the Applications directory was a mistake. Why would you put an installer in the Applications directory? Instead, I double-clicked the installer.
Now my Mac is bricked. It won’t boot.
I take full responsibility for this, but it would be nice if (in the case of idiots like me), when the program runs, it doesn’t do such bad things to an OS if it isn’t running in the correct directory.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
So has ANYONE gotten any of these versions to work?
Are there instructions somewhere that show what the installer is attempting to automate so I can go ahead and manually modify the Take 2 binary?
Thanks!

Hi macgeek.
First off I should say that I’m not very good at this sort of stuff but I thought I’d just try and help anyway, so…
I’ve been looking at exactly what the installer is doing to find out where it’s going wrong and I’ve noticed a few of things:
1. The first patch it tries to apply (to the AppleTV.framework) is supposed to just change disk0s4
March 29th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
hmm.. it deleted most of my comment, ill try emailing you.

March 29th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Excelent work, congratulations and thank you.
How to connect ATV4mac with the itunes library in the same machine on which this ATV4mac installed?.
Another question
The first run from the remote, not the next.
March 29th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
@Patrick
Did you manage to get it to work! -HOW!!
There’s instruction to pair with itunes on the same machine here - they were for Apple TV version 1 but should work with “take 2″
Also what do you mean by “The first run from the remote, not the next.”
March 29th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Good news!!! Version 1.4.3 is out and it solves all the known issues! Go grab it right now( Delete your old installer from /Applications before dropping the new one. Do not run the installer from the dmg, drag it into your /Applications folder. Thank you seb for clearing my mind! ATV4mac is reborn!
March 30th, 2008 at 2:24 am
It did’t work
I replace the string BRFullscreenRenderer to BRWindowRenderer but not work, frontrow dead
I replace the modified Front Row binary for backup and works but not alt tab.
atv4mac starts from the key menu of the remote, but if I go out and want to return to execute atv again does not start from the remote.
Once again, sorry for my English
March 30th, 2008 at 2:37 am
Patrick, drop /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app into your dock, then run it from there with your mouse. Then you can use the remote as usual.
March 30th, 2008 at 3:04 am
But in not possible run always Front Row from the remote?, only with mouse?.
When I initiate session Front Row works from the remote, but if go out of Front Row and execute it again does not work with remote, only with mouse
March 30th, 2008 at 3:12 am
Ok, so I installed the new ATV4Mac and everything seemed good… booted up, loaded up, browsed around the menus… then I tried to rent a movie. It started downloading, but every time I try to watch I get this error: “Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content.”
Has anyone else tried renting a movie with it yet?
March 30th, 2008 at 3:27 am
@macgek its perfect and work like charm
thanks a lot macgeek for this innovations
March 30th, 2008 at 3:33 am
Another great problem, when I navigate upon the menu the volume goes down and up.
This happens when front row it executed for the second time, the first time works perfectly.
It seems that something makes opened that does that it works badly as soon as it is closed and returns to open.
I test it in mac mini CD 1.83 with Tiger updated.
March 30th, 2008 at 3:53 am
Patrick, look for rcd.app and move it to your home directory (basically disabling it). After reboot, +/- won’t control volume anymore.
March 30th, 2008 at 3:53 am
Woohoo! Thanks so much for the hard work. 1.4.3 finally worked for me and I’m watching it now! Next I’ll see how it works w/Take 2.0.1…
Thanks again!

Hi,
I think the new Apple TV update may be stopping the installer from working. The app won’t run even when I go into the CoreServices folder and run frontrow.app manually.
Now I can’t uninstall it neither, as even after I deleted frontrow.app, the software updater doesn’t detect it’s missing, and downloading the FrontRow installer from Apple either thinks my mac doesn’t have frontrow, or that the frontrow in my mac does not need updating. Any ideas how I can get the Apple TV to work/get my previous frontrow back? I’m on Mac OS X 10.4.11
March 30th, 2008 at 4:44 am
rcd.app solved the problem of the volume, thank you very much!!.
Only remains execute atv4mac from the menu key of the remote and use the library of itunes of the same machine.
Thanks again for your help.

@locklin: Update your Quicktime to the latest version via Software Update then re-run the ATV4mac Installer.
@everyone: Do not update ATV to version 2.0.1, it won’t work of course!! It requires patching!! Wait for ATV4mac new installer for 2.0.1.
Those who still got issues, re-run the ATV4mac installer, pastebin the execution log, also pastebin the console.log from Console.app.
March 30th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Got it working on a MacMini, and while the software works fine, many of my DiVX files won’t play as they would in Front Row.
So here’s the next stage: What’s the best way to UNINSTALL atv4mac and get FrontRow back up?
March 30th, 2008 at 11:24 am
@Daniel: Simply re-run ATVmac installer and you’ll have a working version again.
March 30th, 2008 at 11:39 am
@Millet: ATV can run divx files! I will add support to those video formats from the installer.
Or you can do it yourself by installing this on your mac mini: http://www.perian.org/
March 30th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
has somebody got it to run on a hack ?
if yes, which tiger distro (jas, uphuck, xxx, mac.nub, kalyway etc.)
which gpu driver ( nvinject, natit, titan etc. )
thanks
March 30th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Does anyonek know of a way to “lock in” the resolution setting? I have to do the menu+ trick every time I launch, and would like to be able to tell Take 2 to default to a different setting.
Is there some parameter that you can call FrontRow from the command line with that might do it?
Thanks!
March 30th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Works like a charm on my hack now (v1.3.4)!!!. Im using my own 10.4.11 distro (XxX. rev2). The volume issues (going up and down with the arrow keys) doesnt happen while runnin’ atv, thats great!
thanx a lot
March 30th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
This works great! but does anyone know where the synced files are stored?
And another question: when i try to switch resolutions (Pressing ‘menu’ and ‘+’ for more than 6 seconds) i only get one option: 410p, is there any way (maybe by editing a plist file) that i can switch the resolution to normal pal? (720×576)?
March 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Congrats !!! What do you mean by “2.0.1″ ? Is this the actual AppleTV OS, or a new release of ATV4Mac ?
March 30th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
This is great, it works on my imac dual intel imac 24″.
Thank you so much. Any ideas on how to retain control of your local itunes library?
fantastic work.
March 30th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Works like a champ, looks like the only issue i have is i can’t launch it from the remote and the Volume button adjusts the volume while moving the menu. But other than that it works fine.
March 30th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
So has anyone figured out how to get rentals to work yet? And great job man this thing rocks!!!!!!!!!!!
March 30th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Ok I have tried to rent and it gets 100% done and then gives me error code 42117
March 30th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I can’t seem to get YouTube to work on here for some reason? Just says there was a problem connecting - am I missing something simple?
Thanks
March 30th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
@blackCH -> is rev 2.0 already available ?
the last one if found was ppf2 released a few days ago.
anyway i will try with rev1 ppf2 as soon as my download is finished.
which gpu are u using and which driver ( natit, nvinject etc. ) ?
could you integrate atv4mac into your distro ?
would be really great
thanks
March 30th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
First off, great job macgeek! The 1.4.3 version worked like a charm.
However, I have a question and I hope someone here would be able to point me in the right direction. Since installing ATV4mac my ppc apps don’t launch. From the console logs I was able to determine that it was the patched quartzCore framework that was causing the crashes. I was able to restore the framework and this fixed the problems but prevents ATV4mac from working.
It seems that the hacked Mach-O binary in the QuartzCore framework only supports the i386 architecture. Is there a way to patch the universal binary and keep both architectures in the framework?
thanks
March 30th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I just tried to install ATV4mac on my PPC PowerBook G4 and now I cannot log in. The machine seems to display the “Starting Mac OS X” window and doesn’t prompt me for the login dialog.
I tried booting from the Install CD and removing the FrontRow app from the CoreServices folder but it didn’t help either.
How can I remove it and get my PowerBook to let me log-in again?
Thanks.
March 30th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
zaf you need to restore your frameworks:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework
ATV4mac is not compatible with PPC.
March 30th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
That worked like a charm. I just replaced the QuartzCore.framework with the one from the install DVD and removed the AppleTV, BackRow and iPhotoAccess private frameworks.
A quick suggestion: If possible please add a platform check in the installer so that this kind of mishaps could be prevented. Alternatively, as part of the install process, make a backup of any “original” frameworks when over-writing so that they could be restored if needed.
Thanks for your help.

hi i installed this on my XxX 10.4.11, only clicking front row app. i just get a black screen with white apple. on pressing keyboard arrow i get the sound and nothing happens. i have to press the power button to shutdown and back to tiger. otherwise i cant exit it. help me
March 30th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
same problem as cyberduck under 1.4.3…installs without any errors, after reboot and running Front Row just get black screen…so close…
March 30th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
mine is not just blank. its theATV starting screnn where it stops and i can hear the button sounds on pressing arrows
March 30th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
when reverting to AppleTV 1.0 on my mac mini, got the same black screen until I deleted the System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleTV.framework, then all was back to normal.
Is it possible that AppleTV.framework is the culprit for black-screen ATV4mac Take2 installs as well??
March 31st, 2008 at 2:11 am
I’ve got the same problem with error 42177 trying to watch rentals. Has anyone rented and watched a movie successfully with atv4mac? Just wondering… that’s the main reason I want this… renting with a mouse and keyboard sucks… I want to do it all with the remote on my mac mini media center.
March 31st, 2008 at 3:01 am
Joe I was looking it up and it looks like it has to do with some type of firmware updates here is the url I found http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Talk:Take_2_Safe_Update
March 31st, 2008 at 9:36 am
Seems HD rentals does not work due to some DRM protection added by apple in the HDMI interface. Any could confirm if regular rentals work?
March 31st, 2008 at 9:51 am
How to Uninstall:
1. Delete /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
The /System folder is hidden, but you can access via Finder->go->Go to folder and entering /System/Library/CoreServices/
2. Insert the OS X installation DVD and search for “front row”. frontrow.pkg should be found. Run this file. A restart will be required.
3. Run software update to bring front row up to date.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:54 am
hallo
after a long time i have a running ATV2 on my macbook. After a few attempts I deleted my original frontrow.app and started the install app. => hurray! When i start ATV whit a second monitor active, i get only a grey picture on the primary screen, and a black one on the secondary. Out i can hear the clicks from the remote. Maybe this can help anyone… (also a) DANIEL
March 31st, 2008 at 11:37 am
Hurray - finally got it working on my hack
i switched the distro to XxX 10.4.11 rev 1.0 with both ppf1 and ppf2 applied.
Then i updated the complete system and not just itunes/qt and installed xcode and atv4mac 1.4.3.
thanks macgeek for atv4mac and blackch for XxX.
donation is under way…

Will there be away to get around need HDMI out from my macbook to watch HD movies rented from itunes?
March 31st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Neither regular nor HD rentals are working for me.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
It let me rent the movie but then I would not let me watch it is said I need to connect to HDCP? I think. or composite to watch the movie. And I just have it hooked up with VGA. *Sadness*
March 31st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Has anyone who has it connected via DVI to a plasma tried renting a HD movie?
March 31st, 2008 at 6:00 pm
I get the same problems as santhosh (30.03.2008 @ 22:11 CET). It appears to work, I get the white apple on a black screen until I have to hold the power button in to shut down. I let it sit on the blank screen for a long time on on attempt and it looked like it went to a screensaver (pictures of flowers moving up the screen) but nothing else. I’m running it on a macbookpro with latest Tiger.
March 31st, 2008 at 6:46 pm
hey guys, is it me or do you need a password to get into the dmg-file? in case it’s not me: what’s the password?

Does ATV4mac run on OsX Tiger Server?
March 31st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Thanks so much for this!
Can anybody confirm if they have YouTube working? Mine won’t connect.
Also, can anybody get iTunes purchased music authorised on it?
Again, thanks for all your work - will be donating once these niggles are fixed!

How do i restore frameworks?
These ones:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework
/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework
from the leopard dvd..
March 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Where does the apple tv app store the video files?
I Want to watch divx/avi files so i need to put them in that folder!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm
I can confirm YouTube works on my mini, attached via DVI to a Panasonic plasma.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:04 am
Anyone know how to get atv4mac to read the local itunes library?
April 1st, 2008 at 12:06 am
macgeek, you add Leopard support and work out the rental kinks and I will for sure donate! I’ve been waiting fruitlessly for apple to update frontroww to include rentals.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:23 am
Bruce, I have the same question. There is a solution for the old version (Back Row on mac) here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=3654. It does not work for atv4mac though. I would buy atv4mac if I could get it to connect to itunes on the same computer (mac mini) and also be able to rent HD content. Being able to launch it via the apple remote would be a nice bonus too.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:35 am
dave and/or macgeek:
i too am having the same trouble with ppc apps and would like to know how to restore the quartzcore framework file. Can this simply be dragged and dropped into the appropriate folder from the tiger install disk? that won’t screw up the os with different versions of files in the system will it?
April 1st, 2008 at 12:41 am
@jon:
I replaced quartzCore framework right from the Tiger install DVD into /System/Library/Frameworks without a problem and this allowed the PPC apps to launch again. However, this broke ATV4mac. So for now, I guess we have to choose between the 2.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:52 am
thanks for your response dave
im still having troubles restoring the file though- it seems my permissions didn’t allow me to swap out the files so i changed these to allow me to read and write. But after this, it said the file was in use so i could not modify it. Any ideas?
April 1st, 2008 at 1:11 am
@jon
you may have to delete the framework folder on the HD first, and then try adding the one from the install DVD. Finder should ask you to authenticate and I think that will work.
April 1st, 2008 at 1:14 am
@dave
thank you so much - that worked
i guess ill be giving up atv4mac, just too many bugs right now
April 1st, 2008 at 1:38 am
1.4.3 works great.
I waiting to connect with iTunes library in same machine.
Again, excelent work and thank you.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:38 am
When trying to install, I get
“ATV4mac Installer v1.4.3
ERROR: ATV4mac Installer returned 255″
April 1st, 2008 at 3:16 am
DOESN’T WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have downloaded each Release, gone onto Tiger…Installed ATV installer, went to open up Front Row…But it wont work. I opened up the Binary Exec in the MacOS Folder, and it said the Frameworks were Missing. I have Xcode 2.2.1 (Shouldnt need 2.5 as it is a 900+ MB Download), Tiger 10.4.11. Can someone please tell me what is wrong here!
I dont mean to put pressure but I am wasting bandwidth trying this.
allbrokeup.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:41 am
working perfect…authorized and downloaded music haven’t tried movies yet…will soon…thanks and I will donate thank for the hard work!
April 1st, 2008 at 3:49 am
Where do install plug ins to?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:56 am
I can only get one run from the Apple remote and after exiting it reduces the system volume.
Also, it would be great if you could pair the ATV with the itunes lib on the computer.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:38 am
same as axersta1 etal
but the .3 release was MUCH better… good work
April 1st, 2008 at 8:09 am
is there a way to make it work with remote buddy ?
April 1st, 2008 at 11:08 am
Those who are still having issues:
1. Intel mac only, no ppc
2. Tiger 10.4.8+ only, no Leopard
3. Update Tiger via Software Update
4. Be sure QuickTime is updated
5. Be sure you have Tiger 10.4.11
6. Run ATV4mac Installer
7. Save execution log in text file
8. Reboot after ATV4mac Installer
To run Apple TV:
9. Press menu on remote or…
10. Press Apple+Esc on keyboard or…
11. Run /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
12. Check console.log in /Application/Utilities/Console.app
13. Paste everything related to Front Row to http://pastebin.ca
14. Paste execution log from ATV4mac Installer to http://pastebin.ca
15. Post links to your pastebin.ca logs here
No Tiger? => Resize your main partition and add a new one
Install Tiger on the new partition, Dual boot Tiger/Leo with refit
Easy as 123!
April 1st, 2008 at 1:15 pm
raaaaaaaaa first only tiger , then only intel …
i’m cursed
April 1st, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Sorry If I’m being stupid but how do I delete the keyboard shortcut changes - having the volume change I move between cells in excel is getting annoying! everytime
April 1st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Amazing! Nice work Macgeek!
Just got it working on my Dell GX280 after lots of failures w/ different osx86 builds. Fyi, i have a cheapo geforce 6200le to get qe/ci working, a pci ethernet card, and 1gb ram. i have leo 10.5.1 installed already and repartitioned the drive to install tiger.
maybe this will help some cheap bastard w/ a hackintosh like myself:
- used the XxX 10.4.11 build on the 2nd partition
- installed the default settings and added the sound card driver for the gx280, all network drivers, nvinject 0.1.3, and front row (needed?)
- performed all mac updates except the airport ones
- installed xcode and webobjects (needed?) minus the docs and examples on both installers
- installed atv4mac 1.4.3, reboot
- installed the ir keyboard app that came w/ atv4mac, reboot
i haven’t paired atv w/ itunes or rented a movie yet, but movie previews work well
btw, where’s that nifty exploding tv intro? isn’t that the startup intro?
April 1st, 2008 at 11:15 pm
I have, in the name of “it’s cool” installed it on my BLackBook. It works (the .3 rel) as it should save for the whole iTunes and remote second go thing. This would indeed be of GREAT benifit on a Mac att to a TV, where one of its main uses is as a media center (I used to have my PC set up in this fashion). My mac book however does some movie work but I use VLC more often than not, and this has a longer start up time than front row.
So before ‘you’ get too carried away with how you do it, consider why you are doing it. If it is for the “cool” factor then “take it”.
People get enough hassle at work, they don’t need shit about a hobby. Yes, I had problems too but it worked good enough and if I had a media center mac I would keep with it.
I will though I think try the process of going back to front Row. fingeres crossed….
Not because of this projects flaws, (small) because I don’t need it…
Cheers MacGeek…
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:10 am
Macgeek, would you mind listing the known issues with version 1.4.3? I am unable to watch rented movies in SD or HD, cannot connect to itunes on the same machine, cannot launch via remote or via keyboard after the first launch. I don’t know if you want to see logs or not since maybe none of this is currently supposed to be supported.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:13 am
Todd, remember I do not have access to the source code of Apple TV, so I can’t fix everything. Ask Apple to open source their SVN repository and I will see what I can do
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:34 am
I installed ATV4mac and everything seemed to work fine, but when i rebooted, it won’t boot into osx. how can i fix this? i don’t have the osx install disk with me (i’m studying overseas). i think i might not have copied the installer to the applications directory.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:37 am
macgeek, like another person has said if this is ported to leopard i would be happy to donate to have this. Falling that i just wanted to know why it doesn’t work on leopard
April 2nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Wrong Resolution…
Im using a Mac mini (1.5 solo) with the Apple Video Adaptor (to s-video) and im getting this wrong resolution which causes my screen to move to the right, i cant change it (it stays on 853×480i 60hz) and im using a CRT 34 inch display…
Any suggestions?
Jo
April 2nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
@Mighty Jo
Try pressing Menu and + on the remote for more than six seconds.
April 2nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Did that but i cant seem to change the res because this is the only res the Mini apple TV lets me choose (853×480)
Jo.
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Wow, now i saw that the AppleTV can act as an AirTunes station! but it does not work for me…
is it working for anyone?

MacGeek, awesome job, works great, now take a break!
Thanks!
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:05 pm
can i tiger autostart ATV4MAC when I enter Tiger? I tried to put the front row app in the auto log on programs under preferences but it didnt work. Other than that this is great!
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
I sthere aplugin (like the counch surfer and the others) to allow playing a DVD ? The file system viewr allows you to open the DVD, but not play the video, since DVDs are not supported by ATV.
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm
one problem, dont know if its a problem of atv4mac or appletv itself:
when i connect to a shared itunes library ( without syncing ) and exit atv4mac i have to connect via a passcode again every time after re-launching.
Is that normal ?
thanks,
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:25 pm
bugger, if you want to start it automatically you could simply replace Finder.app with Front Row.app. But you won’t be able to return to OS X.
April 3rd, 2008 at 1:18 am
I’m looking forward to seeing a release for Leopard. If there’s a way to add DVR and able to play DVDs on a Mac Mini, it would be greatly awesome!
April 3rd, 2008 at 6:23 am
I installed this and now my MacBook Pro won’t boot up. It won’t even boot up to the install disk. No keyboard commands work at boot up either. Totally forked. I’m not sure what to do.
(I made sure I followed the directions and had a qualified system)
April 3rd, 2008 at 6:56 am
Thanks for the great work! Apple should take a look at the file browser and couchsurfer
Now my question:
I have only limited space on my main disc. Is it possible to install and run atv4mac on an external HDD?
Thanks,
Martin.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:13 am
Martin ,sure it is possible. Just install Tiger on that external HDD and boot from it. Then install atv4mac. Cheers.
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:35 am
Hi macgeek,
the external HDD is on the Firewire port of my Mac Mini.
Even if it is possible to install there another Tiger, I won’t do it. I’m not able to boot the other system, because I’m running a FTP and Web server on my main system.
Is there a technical limitation that it is not possible to choose the drive?
Maybe there is a hack to open the usb or firewire port to the atv?
Thanks,
Martin.
April 3rd, 2008 at 11:53 am
Martin, I may have a custom solution for your typical case. But hey, I’m running out of freaking time. So many requests from users… It would be cool if you guys could support me a bit as well. I gave you free application, but I can’t give you free support, it’s just I don’t have the time. For those who donated, and are having issues, contact me if you need some help on my email address. Thanks!

Can anyone explain how to link this great app to the itunes data on a macmini?
I want to share my movies without going using the Files section.
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Same issue here. I have it working, but it can’t find my photos, nor will it link up with iTunes (I’m on a MacMini).
April 4th, 2008 at 5:26 am
Installed 1.5.0 on my hackintosh and it worked perfectly.
The ATV connection to itunes (separate pc) sticks, but shares do not– i think this is normal.
Question fot Macgeek or anyone else:
Copying .frappliance plugins to the Front Row.app/Contents/Plugins folder doesn’t work. any ideas?
TIA!

I have a mini hooked via DVI and by using SwithResX I can get up to 1080i by not allowing Take 2 to change the resolution.
http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/indexSRX.shtml
Now if someone can figure out how to use the Hex Edit trick to connect to local iTunes this would be perfect.
Scroll down in these old discussions and it will discribe the old way of forcing backrow on mac to connect to local itunes. Things have changed and the the HEX trick as outlined does not work but perhaps someone can figure something out along these lines.

@MacGeek,
just downgraded my mini (2007/09) from Leopard to 10.4.11, installed ATV4mac 1.5.0 - Very smooth installation, runs nicely and connects/synchronizes to iTunes on my MB Pro. - Great job!
I just played with it a bit and think I found 2 bugs:
- starts only once
When I quit ATV (and return to eyeTV running on the same mini) I can not start ATV again. After logout / login it starts again (and again just once).
- ATV stucks with screen saver runnig
After sync with MB Pro it was impossible to return from the screen saver to ATV menu. Tried IR, mouse, keyboard - nothing. Needed to switch off the mini. It just happend once and I’m not sure, if I can reproduce it.
And maybe a “feature request” a question:
There’s one thing I enjoyed with Front Row (Leopard), which I miss desperately: Playback of a Video_TS folder. I usually play back self created (family) DVDs directly from hard disk.
Just a question: virtual keyboard is really nice, but is there any chance to make use of “real” keyboard, if it is connected? My BT keyboard is usually not far away, when I sit in front of my mini/TV….
Will continue to check out the SW this weekend…
Regards from Germany….

That would rock!

I have the same question as vegavnil (except I’m on tiger). How do I restore the frameworks?
thanks.
April 5th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
This looks great and exactly what I’ve been looking to put on my G4 mini. Any chance a Universal Binary will be released? If that happens then a donation is on its way.

Jolter: How do you NOT allow Take2 to change the resolution?
April 6th, 2008 at 3:47 am
This ATV take2 doesn’t work for me. When I press ?esc it takes forever ti start and then it freezes. Does not react on te remote (which worked before installation) The only way two get away from ATV is to rebbot the computer. Please please tell me how to de-install ATV.
April 6th, 2008 at 9:05 am
I couldn’t get TV4mac 1.5 to install, but 1.43 did…
added the keyboard pkg….. Question- is there any way to change the volume within ATV?
April 6th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Hey guys, I just created a forum for ATV4mac to let you exchange your experience with ATV4mac. You can also submit issues or add your suggestions : http://tinyurl.com/4jmtou
April 6th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
DocTauri,
I am not in front of my mini right now but basically it is as follows
Install SwitchResX
In System Preferences find the SwitchResX control Panel
In the Control Panel click the Applications section
Drag and drop Frontrow.app in the app section
Highlight Frontrow.app press edit button
At the very bottom there is a drop down menu
Choose do not let application change resolution (or something to that effect)
When you open frontrow.app the same first window will appear choose what ever is there 480p or 576p
Once you press that the next window will say you have chosen (your native resolution) in my case 1080i (although I normally get 1080p) select OK and you have up to 1080i

I have install 1.5.0 on my macmini with Tiger 10.4.11, when I reboot after the instalation, If I put MENU from my remote controler ATV4MAC not run. If I am going to Aplications, I don´t fount ATV4MAC aplications to run.
I need to create two partitions? or one with my Tiger….
April 8th, 2008 at 9:50 am
jrotaola read the FAQ. The ATV4mac installer is located in /Applications but the ATV4mac Front Row application is located in /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app.
April 8th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I’m having the same problem as mighty Joe (2 April, 1810 above) - everything shifted slightly to the right.
I’ve tried SwitchResX, but the ATV still switches resolution.
Other than that this looks fantastic - donation on its way if anyone can fix this problem
Oh, if it helps, I’m using a Mac Mini with DVI - HDMI cable into a LCD TV at 720p.
April 8th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
After to installs I don´t have any aplication on System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app. I don´t have tihs folder….
April 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
@jrotaola:
The /System folder is hidden, but you can access it via Finder->go->Go to folder and by entering /System/Library/CoreServices/
April 8th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
when I start ATV4MAc I only get teh silver apple on black (with remote or via Coreservices) and then nothing happens even if I press the remote. I have mac mini with 10.4.11. I cant do more than shut down and after reboot the screen has another resolution….what to do ? I have installed 1.4.3

The “NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LEOPARD YET!” should probably go underneath or above the Download link. Or with (Intel Macs Only).
Perhaps (Intel Macs Only…EXCEPT Leopard)
I look forward to the post that says LEOPARD SUPPORTED!

DocTauri, you got served. Get ATV4mac 1.5.1 to install the latest ATV 2.0.2 update on your mac. Or just run the 1.5.0 ATV4mac installer, and ‘Check for updates…”
Enjoy!

Now that’s what I call service. Donation to follow.
Thanks for everything!

Works great. FYI: In 2.0.1, my menu seemed to extend outside of the box it was supposed to scroll in. This is fixed in 2.0.2.
Thanks again!
April 15th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Does the fact that the “NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LEOPARD” sign has disappeared mean that ATV4Mac is now 10.5 compatible?
April 15th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
1. Connect with itunes and sync.
2. Quit Front Row/ATV
3. Restart and try to play a song
NOTHING! It will not play, just sits there looking at you like an idiot. Huge Bug! I have tried it syncing to 2 different macs with the same results. Only fix is to tell itunes to forget the AppleTV and setup again… Huge PITA. Can this please be acknowledged by others so I don’t feel like I am going crazy.
Other thing is AC3 Passthrough does not work.
April 15th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
@lardawge: Just tried exactly what you suggest. Works fine for me. Haven’t tried AC3 Passthrough yet.

@James:
Thanks for the help!
Now at a loss as to what might be causing it! What hardware are you using?
I am on a intel mini running 10.4.11… maybe I will try deleting front row, updating and starting over…
April 15th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Also on an Intel mini, fresh install of 10.4, upgraded to 11 (sounds like something from Spinal Tap …).
Sounds perhaps like it’s not actually syncing - have you checked in your ‘media’ folder to see if the tracks are actually there?
April 15th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Yes, everything works up until I restart ATV Software than all is forgotten. Funny thing is that I can still play movies and music via “shuffle”, I just can’t play individual tracks… It’s a weird one for sure.
April 15th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Ok, I have gotten closer to a solution and figured out what is happening. Turns out it only happens if you don’t sync the music and are just streaming. Why it will stream if you use “shuffle” but not songs individually is beyond me but that is what’s happening. @James, could you try not syncing a few songs just to double check this to be the case?
April 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I just dropped 1.51 into my Tiger Intel MacMini applications and it downloaded Apple TV Take 2.02.
After the download finished I got the following error message:
ATV4mac Installer v1.5.1
Created by skr3dii - macgeekblog.com
Missing required /usr/bin/gdb, Please install Xcode.
http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/
ERROR: ATV4mac Installer returned 255
Any idea what went wrong?

And additional info:
When I tried to download XCode from the ADC, it did not work, as I have no ID and Password to access it

Sorry, RTFM
Just downloading the 1GB file. Will try it out tomorrow again

After overcoming my own stupidity, I got 2.02 installed and ist starts via remote, just like Front Row did.
But I found two essential “glitches” in working with ATV4Mac:
1. After exiting the program via remote, it will not come back when using the remote. I also don’t have an icon for ATV4Mac anywhere in my dock or applications.
2. To be able to really use ATV4Mac it is vital to be able to pair to iTunes on the same machine. I am using the MacMini as my Media Center and if I can’t acces my content, it is not that beneficial.
Are there easy ways to solve those two issue. If I get it working that it is usable for me, I’ll gladly donate.
April 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Same here:
After exiting the program, it will not come back the remote. I’ll have to reboot my mac to run appleTV again.
April 20th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I had the same issue. It wont come back after exiting to computer. Also the resolution gets screwed up. I appreciate the effort very much. but I don’t think this is ready yet.
@Macgeek, I’ll be sure to contribute to your “please work to get this better” fund. Keep at it. Please.
