Now that Vista is RTM, you can ask yourself which one has the best GUI ever.
MacOS X or Vista?
And the answer is………. L.I.N.U.X. !!!!
A collegue was running it on Ubuntu at work.
Wow, when I saw that, I could just not believe my eyes…

This is KDE. And let’s not forget interface consistency and unified design principles when comparing GUI’s. MacOS X remains the clear leader.

It’s actually KDE using GDesktop “wdigets”which gives it that clock and the OSX Dock. Been using compiz and XGL on mu Ubuntu machine but recently switched to Fedora 6 and they are using a forked version of of it. Thing that surprises me is it has like no affect on the system resources doing all that most likely didn’t even budge the CPU.

The dragging of windows freaks me out. Notice how the window bends while moving. Not sure if that feature is a good thing. I always wished that there was a tighter relationship between the linux gui and the core kernel - it seems that through all the years there has been a sluggishness to the gui interface because the way X works.
Either way I am still a hard core linux fan.

That looks really cool. I usually use XP, but this is something else. Not bad for free!

Don’t forget OS X also supports window transparency, and core animation in leopard will let someone write things similar to those ripples/matrix letters.
Expose works better in OS X than the Kompose rip off.
Also remember the hardware requirements, you can run all of OS X’s effects on anything above a Radeon 9550 with a G3. Not sure what the requirements for Beryl/Compiz are tho.

Hey also I know where I’ve seen that Cube effect before…OS X fast user switching! Although theres no real need to make it a full cube and be able to drag it about. But seriously, most of that video is wannabee OS X stuff.

OS X RIP OFF!

As for the performance, I am using Compiz on a Radeon 7000. The only slow effect is the cube, but I don’t use it as I think it is useless.

Dumb, why the heck would I ever want to rotate my windows as a full cube? Stop showing off the whizzy effects (both videos are pretty much exactly the same) and show us some functionality.
Sure, it’s cool that linux can do some of these things smoothly now. But to claim it’s instantly the best desktop system with Beryl is crap. I saw nothing in the way of Spotlight, quicksilver, etc.

As a long time mac user/advocate, I have to take offense with… well, all but two of the above posts.
This knee jerk reaction of “Of course it’s not better!” or “Why would I use that?!” is simply stupid. To have any “mac is the best!” user question superfluous UI trappings is beyond hypocrisy. Macintosh software is littered with *many* examples of form-before-function.
These videos are very impressive and to say anything less is ludicrous, IMO.

This feature is pretty cool, it kinda reminds me of windows vista with the cube thing going on.

It’s impressive from a graphical point of view, but linux offers nothing in the way of an integrated user interface.
Deep down inside lies the hideously complex and cryptic command line, along with millions of little pieces of software scattered throughout thousands of folders. Every time you want to install something, woe to you if you do not have a fancy package manager built into your distro, because you’ll then have to do it manually. To install something
specialized, you may have to do it manually as well. And don’t think you can just install something in linux… you first have to download and install X, Y, and Z before you can install C… because C depends on these being installed already. Sometimes you have to compile before you can install, which can take hours, literally or perhaps
not.
Don’t make the mistake into thinking “GUI” is purely about looks. It’s not. It’s about functionality also. It’s clear linux has a LONG way to go in this aspect.
Sure, linux is fun when you have it all set up… but expect to spend days on it.

Why do things like this always turn into a “my OS is better than your OS because (insert appropriate plus/minus points abt my/your OS)” argument? They all have their pros and cons, and different people use them.
To me this is a very good demonstration of efficient programming and resource usage. Compiz achieves graphical effects similar to(better?) windows vista, but it does this on computers with far less grunt than the basic requirements for vista. IMHO, praise be upon the devs for that. The people who wrote the code, the creators, never claimed the
effects were original or that their product made linux a better at anything than any other system.

OK, am a linux newbie, but have to say I am very impressed with this GUI and would love to give it a try, I have gotten Ubuntu installed but could really use some instructions on how to get this GUI setup. If someone could give me some general instructions I would appreciate it.

xgl and aixgl are very impresive core animation its gonna be amazing aero… well im going to admit that when we think about good programing we need to leave microsoft on the “other side” linux and mac users are different in many ways. mac users cares a little bit more about form and linux its all about power (hey im not saying that os isnt
powerfull) but we must remeber that the war is against microsoft´s linux and os are kind of friends
Sorry for my clumsy english.

Just so all of you know this, You do not need a supercomputer to use XGL/AiGLX with Compiz/Beryl. Unlike with Vista, which is claiming to require 1 gig of RAM and 100Gigs of Hard Drive, most linux distro’s need no more than 256 Ram and 20 Gigs of Hard Drive. Heck, you can even run these effects full speed on a computer with those specs. I think
the effects now offered to linux are even better than thos e that mac and future users of vista will get. A side note on macs. I think they focus TOO much on visual appeal. They let quality go down the drain.

Uh, let me get this straight.
Mac fanboys complain about how the effects in XGL are “Useless”, yet they continue to admire OS X?
I never knew the Genie effect was really important. Or how the dock blows up icons. Or how about the extra ‘flashing’ of the shortcut you clicked in the Finder bar?
All is pretty useless, but Mac fanboys look for reasons to trash other OS’s. Simple minded losers.
